I don’t think little kids necessarily need to listen to little kid music, whatever that is. Beenie and Mimi listen to all sorts of things. In fact, I’m not sure that I ever play anything for them that could be classified as ‘kiddie music’. When they were newborns, my husband got a CD of songs by The Cure that were lullaby-ized to make palatable for fresh ears. We played it a couple times, but why water down The Cure? Why screw with perfection?
Below are lists of what is on the turntable and in the CD player on any given day. I’ll try to photograph some of the record covers, since they are sort of a dying (but not yet dead!) breed of media. A little recognition of vinyl is certainly deserved.
P.S. — It’s not me who is forcing them to listen to Bjork all day. Mimi has started to make obsessive and unreasonable demands re: this choice. Don’t get me wrong, I like me some of the Icelandic princess, but not over and over again, and not always the same album. I’m not sure why she’s so unbending about this, but she throws a HUGE fit if it’s not on eternal replay. Weird.
So far today we’ve listened to, in no particular order:
5.12.08
Despite many, many playings of Johnny Cash and Bjork, this past weekend there was a small breakthrough in terms of introducing new records (CD’s) into the musical mix. Belle and Sebastian made an appearance with “If You’re Feeling Sinister” as well as the two CD collection of Kruder Dorfmeister “The K&D Sessions”. There has been a new fondness for K.D. Lang’s “Shadowland” and a resurgence of the “Verve\\Remixed” CD. If this keeps up I’ll have to make an official list! Woo hoo!
3.14.08
It’s not like we haven’t been listening to music for the past week, because we have. It’s just that some people (Mimi, you know who you are) are proving quite intolerant of the vast selection of music we have to offer. Insisting, instead, on only dancey music, something with a beat. What’s wrong with the children of today? So over and over again, day in, day out, Bjork: Debut, Link Wray: Walkin’ With Link, Bebel Gilberto: Tanto Tempo, the Beastie Boys: The Mix Up, and Kraftwerk: The Mix have been on the CD player — MUUUUUSIK… NON-STOP! There are a few exceptions, which I believe to hold some kind of sentimental comfort for my baby’s listening pleasure, and they include any number of older Johnny Cash favorites as well as a pretty great RCA Country Legends: The Carter Family album. For some reason they both love those records, and if I hadn’t been listening to them way too much for the past year and a half, I probably would too. Maybe I’ll try to sneak something into the mix later this afternoon. I tried to play Duke Ellington’s: Money Jungle, one of my all time faves during breakfast the other day and they simply were not havin’ it! ——————————————————–>>>
